6.2 Phase II Work Effort

      The primary general objective of Phase II is to begin to acquire experience in properly designing and executing evocation and invocation rituals. As indicated in Section 4.4, I already have some fairly good experience in this area, but I have never had the opportunity to dedicate the time and energy required to attend to the many delicate details of a systematic approach to ritual Magick. The evocation of the Spirit Taphthartharath (see Section 3.4) will be the specific objective of Phase II.

The evocation ritual for Taphthartharath given in Crowley's "Equinox" will be thoroughly studied and analyzed.

Since Taphthartharath is the Spirit of the planet Mercury, the mythology of this form of archetypal energy will be investigated. His Roman form as Mercury, His Egyptian form as Thoth, His Greek form as Hermes, and his Scandinavian form as Odin will be studied along with the histories and the pantheons of the Romans, Egyptians, Greeks, and Scandinavians.

This task will involve the actual creation of the talismans and incantations that are require for Task D. For the development of talismans, the Mercurial colors yellow-orange, purple, grey, and indigo rayed with violet will be used along with abstract forms which portray such Mercurial characteristics as lightning fast speed, extreme maneuverability, and androgyny.

Each of the primary correspondences for the Mercurial archetype given in Crowley's "777" will be meditated upon. This will include at least eight or nine basic correspondences (animal, plant, precious stone, etc.) for Crowley's and Harris' Ist, VIth, and IXth Tarot Trumps*, as well as the form this archetype assumes under the auspices of the Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, and Scandinavians.

An evocation ritual for Taphthartharath will be constructed. This will involve an overall plan for the ritual which will include a systematic utilization of the talismans and poetic incantations generated in Task B.

The ritual will be executed and assiduously documented immediately afterwards.

As with Task E of Phase I, the principal objective will be to train myself to be sensitive to the environmental, physiological, and psychological conditions associated with events which may be classed as psychic or synchronistic in which meaningful coincidences occur for which there are no discernible cause and effect relationships**.

An interim report and briefing will be prepared and delivered.

*These Trumps are attributed, respectively, to the planet Mercury, and the two signs, Gemini and Virgo, which are ruled by Mercury.

**Carl Jung gives the example of the man who goes to the theater, and on the way home happens to notice that the license number of the taxi he has employed is identical to the number on his theater ticket. Then, when the man arrives at his house, the phone rings and it is a wrong number, but the desired number is identical to the theater ticket and taxi license number.
